Weavers Events: Spirituality


Weavers is a programme of performances, talks, workshops and readings curated by Dr Silvia Battista. It’s part of Into The Wyld, a festival of contemporary art exploring the legacy of the medieval poem Sir Gawain And The Green Knight.

The festival is divided into three themes: Nature, Chivalry and Spirituality. The events below are all connected to the theme of SPIRITUALITY.

Saturday 9th November 12 -4:30pm – Piecing It Back Together by Niamh Tan

Piercing It Back Together is a durational performance that delves into the depths of the psyche and emotional tumult associated to womanhood, the figure of Morgan Le Fay, and the persecution of women. By confronting discomfort, she aims to create spaces for introspection and dialogue surrounding the body and the possibility of creating something beautiful out of inherited trauma

Catherine Swire’s collection of poems, Soil, published by the Artel Press and illustrated by Marina Kolchanova, explores the way that trauma is translated by landscape, specifically that of the Worcestershire, Herefordshire.

Catherine works in the landscape that inspired the father of English landscape poetry and dreamscape, Langland; a contemporary of the Gawain poet.

Inspired by Morgan Le Fay, the weaver of the tale of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, this event concludes the great adventure of Into the Wyld to honour and salute the work of all the artists, thinkers and makers who participated in this incredible journey.

Come and join us dear visitor to fulfil together the end of the cycle of Sir Gawain’s rite of passage. You will join the celebration of the feminine and masculine powers finally coming together in the depth of winter and in the heat of the underworld. The gift of The Weavers for you will be a unique experience wherein the theatrical, the ritualistic and the ceremonial will be carefully crafted through sound, voice, storytelling and presence.

At the end of the exhibition the public is invited to participate in a round table conversation with the artists and the curators of the exhibition together with Dr Catherine Morris, who will moderate it. This will offer the opportunity to both the public and the artists to share ideas and explore further the cultural relevance that the tale of Sir Gawain and The Green Knight have for our complex times.

Continuing at Birkenhead Priory: Audio walk by Kris Darby

Return to the Green is an audio walk where listeners are cast as the ghost of the mythical Gawain, arriving at the Green Chapel to meet the Green Knight once more. However, it has been over 600 years since their last visit and the earthen mound of the chapel is now the ruins of Birkenhead Priory. With humanity now only a spectral presence, the world has returned to the green.
