About this objectDrypoint depicting a historic street scene in Prenton, featuring large trees dominating the composition and a child chasing pigs in the foreground.
The print was created by William Charles Penn, an artist of great importance in the Liverpool area due to his close associations with the Liverpool School of Art and his long career as a portrait and landscape painter.
The print itself carries a distinctive provenance. It was given by Penn to Lady Ann Leverhulme as a gift. In the 1950s, Lady Ann Leverhulme invited her children’s nanny, the donor of this print, Joan Turner, to select a gift from her gallery room at Thornton Manor. She chose this etching of Old Prenton, the two women remained in contact until Lady Leverhulme’s death. The work was displayed for many years in Joan's home on the Wirral.
