About this objectThis piece encapsulates Katrin Moye’s blending of intricate artistic skill with humour, direct feminist messaging, and a deep love of research.
The artwork is a homage to the 15th century Welsh female poet Gwerful Mechain. Mechain is known for her erotic and ‘indecent’ poetry – a subject that this piece tributes. The inscription in its centre: ‘Lovely bush, blessed be it by God above’ is taken directly from the last line of one of her poems, sometimes translated as ‘To the Vagina’. The floral ‘bush’ around the edges of the piece is a direct allusion to this theme.
The piece shows the shared artistic influences of Moye and the Williamson’s Della Robbia collection. Both draw from the work of Luca and Andrea Della Robbia, ceramicists from 15th and 16th Century Florence. Moye’s piece, with its green and blue floral edge and bold blue and white centre, directly references the Italian ceramicists’ style.
