Lumsden produced over 350 etchings, often printing his own plates, and travelled widely, including multiple trips to India, which inspired some of his most celebrated works. He authored The Art of Etching (1925), a definitive manual on the subject. He was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy and was married to fellow artist Mabel Royds
