Ernest Stephen Lumsden was a British painter, printmaker, and etching expert renowned for his atmospheric landscapes and architectural scenes. Born in London, he studied at Reading Art School and briefly at the Académie Julian in Paris. He taught at Edinburgh College of Art and became deeply associated with Scotland, where he lived for much of his life.
Lumsden produced over 350 etchings, often printing his own plates, and travelled widely, including multiple trips to India, which inspired some of his most celebrated works. He authored The Art of Etching (1925), a definitive manual on the subject. He was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy and was married to fellow artist Mabel Royds
