Stephen Gooden (1892–1955) was a master British engraver known for his exquisite copperplate work, particularly in book illustration and design. A graduate of the Slade School of Fine Art, he gained acclaim for his finely detailed bookplates and title pages, many commissioned by royalty, including Queen Elizabeth and the young Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret. His engravings for publishers like Nonesuch Press and George Harrap & Co. reflect his technical brilliance and imaginative style. Gooden’s St George and the Dragon engraving inspired the design of the George Medal. He was a Fellow of both the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers.
