Name/TitleThe Rialto Venice
About this objectEtching and drypoint depicting an urban landscape of Venice, with crowds on a staircase to the left and tall buildings in the distance.
This work was made by Sir David Young Cameron (1865–1945), who was a distinguished Scottish painter and etcher, renowned for his evocative landscapes and architectural studies. Born in Glasgow to Reverend Robert Cameron and Margaret Robertson, he was educated at The Glasgow Academy and later studied at both the Glasgow School of Art and the Edinburgh School of Art. Cameron gained early acclaim as a printmaker, producing over 500 etching plates during his career, making him one of the foremost figures in the ‘Etching Revival’.
This work, although featuring a number of figures and a crowd on the staircase, still showcases the stillness and calmness that was associated with his personal artistic style.
