About this objectUrban landscape depicting George's Dock during its reconstruction in 1822, with horse and carriage, as well as various figures dotted around the scene.
William Gawin Herdman carved a career as a prominent Liverpool painter and draughtsman, renowned for his detailed topographical views of the city. He became an art teacher and actively participated in the Liverpool Academy before his expulsion in 1857, following a row over the influence of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood within the Academy. Despite this, he continued exhibiting in London and locally, gaining recognition for his accurate depictions of Liverpool's evolving urban landscape.
Herdman found significant patronage from figures like Alderman William Bennett and Joseph Mayer, who commissioned numerous drawings.
