About this objectA Della Robbia red earthenware saucer that is slip coated with sgraffito and hand painted decoration. 8 leaves radiate from the centre in greens, with a scrolled design to rim in red and yellow. The underside is washed in turquoise.
Ruth Bare was the daughter of an architect and art writer. She received training at a local art school as well as at the Liverpool 'Art Sheds'. She joined the pottery at age 16 and stayed for the majority of its existence as a colourist. When the pottery closed she settled into domestic life, marrying Positivist minister Otto Baier and having four sons together.
Whilst some of the paintwork and colouring is crude, it demonstrates potential and the ability to combine Renaissance and Mediterranean styles. This piece is extremely colourful and eye catching, harking back to motifs from William Morris and William de Morgan.
