About this objectThe artist created this sketch in the midst of his critical and commercial success. Sketches such as these reveal the artist’s eye more intimately.
From 1904, Steer was the most consistently highly-praised artist at the New English Art Club. The Tate Gallery started acquiring Steer’s works in 1909. Around the time he created this sketch, the artist was described in a 1906 Spectator review as ‘the most English of the triad of the English School’ because of ‘his vigorous treatment of his subjects’ and his ‘largeness of view and full colour.’
