About this objectThis painting shows the artist’s older brother, Revered William Henry Hornby Steer (1856-1938). The artist and his brother were both born in Birkenhead, Merseyside. Their father Philip Steer (1810-1871), was a portrait painter, landscape artist and art teacher. The elder Philip Steer ran an art school from their family home in Grange Mount, Birkenhead.
The artist would go on to be the first living artist to have a solo exhibition at the Tate Gallery.
