About this objectRobert Weir Allan (1851-1942) was a Scottish-born artist known for his landscape and marine paintings. He attended the Acadรฉmie Julian around the same time as Steer and they were both influenced by the French Impressionism they encountered in Paris. Over the course of his lifetime, more than 84 of Allanโs paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy.
Steer painted this sketch at Richmond during one of his frequent holidays to the countryside. Whilst on vacation from his role as Painting Professor at the Slade, he would travel to various rural locations usually accompanied by the same group of friends.
