About this objectSteer received his initial art training from his father Philip Steer (1810-1871), a portrait painter, landscape artist and art teacher. His father ran an art school from their house in Grange Mount, Birkenhead.
In this self-portrait, the young artist wears the same green cloak that his father had also worn in his self-portrait (also in the Williamson collection). He strikes a dramatic, classical pose.
