About this objectThe young girl in this portrait was the daughter of the artist’s sister, Catherine Mary Cutmore Steer (b. 1851). Steer was fond of portraying children and his niece makes an appearance in several works.
The artist painted this work in the same year he was appointed Professor of Painting at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. Steer taught alongside notable artists such as Frederick Brown (1851-1941) and Henry Tonks (1862-1937). This group of teachers influenced generations of artists including Augustus John (1878-1961), Paul Nash (1889-1946) and Stanley Spencer (1891-1959).
