About this objectSteer became Professor of Painting at the Slade School of Fine Art, London in 1893. While he held this Slade teaching post, he was based in Chelsea but he frequently travelled to Yorkshire to paint landscapes during his summers. This painting near the historic market town of Knaresborough, North Yorkshire was created during one of these trips.
The artist tried to paint outdoors or en plein air where possible to capture naturalistic light effects on the landscape. Between 1893 and 1911, he visited sites associated with the 18th century picturesque tour, painting sites of an ‘ideal English landscape.’
