About this objectThe flecked brushstrokes used in this seascape capture the effects of sparkling sunlight. The pearlescent misty atmosphere and the looser handling of paint are similar to the techniques Steer used for Impressionistic beach scenes in his earlier career.
In 1887, Steer stayed at the Étaples art colony, an artists’ retreat in Northern France. The coastal scenes he painted in the following years experimented with the styles of Alfred Sisley (1839-1899), Claude Monet (1840-1926), Georges Seurat (1859-1891) and Paul Signac (1863-1935).
