Inscription and MarksThis castle was built by Ranulph Earl of Chester when he returned from the Holy Wars. It stands upon a hill with mountains on each side, it takes up a vast extent of ground, and had strong walls with many towers and was supplyed with water from a well in the highest part of it, formerly of a great depth, but now almost filled up with rubbish. An ancient family of Beestons, (from which Sir William Beeston late governor of Jamaica descended) take their name from this town & castle. The present owner is Sir RO Mostyn Bart/S.B. Delin N.B. Sculp 1727.
