Name/TitleSeascape off Walmer, Kent
About this objectLate in his career Steer visited the seaside each summer. According to his fellow artist, Philip Connard, 'Steer's requirements when painting were, in order of importance: (1)Shelter from wind, (2) Proximity to a lavatory, (3) Shade from the sun, (4) Protection from children, [and] (5) Subject.'
Steer's eyesight began to fail in 1927 and by 1935 sight in both eyes was restricted to peripheral vision. He painted this watercolour from Walmer in Kent the year before he was incapacitated and animates the subtle grey-blue washes with a small boat unusually sketched in pencil which gives the piece scale and context.
