Name/TitleLandscape near Bridgnorth
About this objectWatercolour, landscape near Bridgnorth with trees and large skies, by Philip Wilson Steer 1925.
Steer visited Bridgnorth in Shropshire for holidays in 1901,1911 and again in 1925. The town is built on a horseshoe bend of the River Severn on a rocky promontory, which provides extensive views over the surrounding countryside. He painted similar views in oil as well as watercolour using a low horizon, restricting his palette and emphasising the smooth abstract horizontal shapes of the landscape and clouds. A more abstract work in oil, showing a very similar view in high summer, is also in the Williamson collection.
