About this objectFrom 1893 to 1911, the artist visited sites associated with the 18th century picturesque tour in order to capture the ‘ideal English landscape’ in his paintings. He adopted a more traditional English style, inspired by J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851), John Constable (1776-1837) and Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788).
Steer enjoyed working outdoors but hated strong sunlight and draughts. He would often create preparatory works which he would later finish in his studio.
