About this objectSteer frequently travelled to Yorkshire to paint landscapes during his summers. This painting near the historic market town of Knaresborough, North Yorkshire was created during one of these trips.
The artist tried to paint outdoors or en plein air where possible to capture naturalistic light effects on the landscape. Since the 1890s, Steer experimented more with watercolours. He applied very thin and almost transparent colour washes. These watercolours were often preparatory and he would create finished paintings when back in his studio.
