About this objectThis work was painted while the artist was spending the summer at Alum Bay, Isle of Wight. Steer frequently travelled to the same sites that J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851) had visited on his picturesque tours. Turner had made numerous watercolours, studies and sketches during his time on the Isle of Wight.
From the mid 1890s, Steer dramatically changed his artistic style. He began to consciously re-examine and emulate the works of the Old Masters such as Paul Peter Rubens (1577-1640), J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851) and John Constable (1776-1837).
