About this objectThis group of four preparatory sketches were made for an oil painting commissioned by the War Artists’ Advisory Committee.
During the First World War, Steer was recruited by Lord Beaverbrook to paint the Royal Navy at Dover. In 1931, he was awarded the Order of Merit which he accepted reluctantly. He had previously rejected a knighthood.
Steer’s Order of Merit medal awarded by King George IV can also be found in the Williamson collection.
