About this objectThis sketch was for the self-portrait commissioned by the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
In 1886, Steer co-founded the New English Art Club and he exhibited with them on a regular basis. His appointment as Professor of Painting at the Slade School of Fine Art coincided with the growing respectability of the New English Art Club. The two institutions became closely associated from 1893.
