About this objectThis is the artist’s first oil painting, completed at the age of 15. The year before he painted this work, Steer had joined the Department of Coins and Medals at the British Museum. However, he found the Civil Service examinations too demanding so he quit. He became an artist by 1878 and studied at the South Kensington Drawing Schools (now known as the Gloucester School of Art) from 1880 to 1881. He then trained in Paris at the Académie Julian.
