Name/TitleMrs D. S. MacColl (sketch)
About this objectSteer painted this sketch at Richmond during one of his frequent holidays to the countryside. Whilst on vacation from his role as Painting Professor at the Slade, he would travel to various rural locations around England. He would usually be accompanied by the same group of friends. These friends included Dugald Sutherland MacColl (1859-1948), the Scottish watercolourist, art critic, and keeper of the Tate Gallery for five years, and his wife Andrée Adèle Désirée Jeanne (Mrs D. S. MacColl, 1873-1945). The artist began this sketch using the light from a lamp in the lodging house the group of friends were staying in.
