Name/TitleMrs D. S. MacColl
About this objectSteer first made the initial sketch for this finished portrait at Richmond during one of his frequent holidays to the countryside. A Venetian nocturne can be seen in the background of the painting. Whilst on vacation from his role as Painting Professor at the Slade, Steer would travel to various rural locations around England. He would usually be accompanied by the same group of friends, including Dugald Sutherland MacColl (1859-1948), the Scottish watercolourist, art critic and writer, and his wife Andrée Adèle Désirée Jeanne (Mrs D. S. MacColl, 1873-1945).
