About this objectThe artist painted this self-portrait around the time he studied at the Gloucester School of Art, then known as the South Kensington Drawing Schools. Steer was rejected from the Royal Academy of Art Schools in London so he moved to Paris. In Paris, he studied at the Académie Julian where he was taught by William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905). He later studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts where he was taught by Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889).
