About this objectLandscape, probably near Brill, Buckinghamshire (1923)
Steer’s style radically changed from the mid 1890s as he began to consciously re-examine and emulate the works of the Old Masters such as Paul Peter Rubens (1577-1640), J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851) and John Constable (1776-1837). The influence of Rubens can be observed in the wide vista and high viewpoint of this landscape.
The artist travelled to sites that were popular with eighteenth-century travellers in search of picturesque landscapes.
