About this objectCaldecott was born in Chester and, following five years at the King's School, entered banking as a profession - but he always drew in his own time. His first published drawing was of a fire at the Queen's Railway Hotel, Chester and repeated success in getting drawings into print convinced him to give up banking and move to London. His career as an illustrator took off and within a few years he was internationally famous. Sales of his Nursery Rhymes reached 857,000 copies by 1884.
