About this objectSir Daivd Muirhead Bone was born in Partick near Glasgow, the son of a journalist. He apprenticed to an architect and in 1898 turned his attention to etching with which his name is most closely identified. At the suggestion of Sir William Rothenstein he became the first Official War Artist and served on the Western Front and with the Navy. His etchings of buildings and bombed sites have been described as having the grandeur of Piranesi with the sensitivity of Whistler and yet still maintain a remarkable degree of detail.
This watercolour shows the steamer connecting the Isle of Skye to mainland Scotland. The intense colours, details foreground and empty middle ground make an interesting alternative to the watercolours by Steer that a displayed.
