We welcome school visits to Birkenhead Priory

Visits to Birkenhead Priory are free of charge for schools during the hours that we are open to the public. Summer opening hours are Wednesday to Friday, 1.00pm – 5.00pm and Saturday and Sunday 10.00am – 5.00pm. Winter opening hours are Wednesday to Friday, 12.00pm – 4.00pm and Saturday and Sunday 10.00am – 4.00pm. We ask that you call or email Lynn McGinn on 0151 666 3892 / lynnmcginn@wirral.gov.uk to let us know if you are planning to visit during these hours, so that we can plan your visit with you and discuss your requirements.

Schools are also welcome to visit the Priory while we are closed to the public. Visits outside our opening hours cost £50 for a 2.5 hour visit and must be booked in advance. Please contact Lynn McGinn on lynnmcginn@wirral.gov.uk / 0151 666 3892

School visits to Birkenhead Priory are self-led. A member of Wirral Museums staff will welcome you and give you a set of clipboards to use during your visit along with any other resources that you have requested, then leave you to explore.

The site is still operating under restricted capacity for the indoor spaces due to ongoing COVID guidance, so school visits are somewhat limited at present.

You are welcome to visit the outside spaces as usual, but numbers inside the Chapter House are restricted to 4 people at a time and the Undercroft (where the museum exhibits are) is limited to 7 people. The Refectory is currently closed to the public.

We can provide you with the use of 5 gazebos measuring 3m x 3m, with tables and benches (to seat 30 children) for your visit, free of charge. Please let us know, when you book, if you would like to use them, so that we can set them up for you.

When you book your visit, we will send you details of the schools’ resources that we have available at that time.

We can print resources for your visit, at £2.50 per set of 30 double-sided, colour, A4 sheets. If you prefer, you can print them yourself in school and bring them with you.

We provide the loan of 30 clipboards free of charge and can also provide a class set of HB pencils, coloured pencils, rubbers and sharpeners for 30 children and 100 sheets of plain A4 paper for use during your visit for £10. Please let me know if you would like to make use of the resource pack.

If a member of the Priory team is available, they can provide ½ hour tours of the site for up to 15 children, for £5 per tour. Please let us know, when you book, if this is something that you are interested in.

We look forward to welcoming you to Birkenhead Priory soon. If you need to know more about any aspect of our school visits, please get in touch with Lynn McGinn on 0151 666 3892 / lynnmcginn@wirral.gov.uk
