Wirral Society of Arts 70th Anniversary Exhibition

About This Project

The Wirral Society of Arts is 70 this year and the organisation are  holding their biennial members exhibition highlighting the diverse range of its 160 talented, contemporary artists as well as reflecting on the work of past members

Coinciding with the member’s exhibition of recent work, there will be a small exhibition celebrating the history of the WSA and will include newly framed works from a folio of artwork presented in 1951 to the then retiring curator of the Lady Lever Gallery in Port Sunlight. These works by the WSA artists were donated to the Williamson Art Gallery & Museum earlier this year.

Come and see the creative, inspiring work, beautifully displayed in the fabulous setting of one of the North West’s premier galleries and join the growing trend to acquire affordable, original art works!

To give some context for The Wirral Society of Arts and it’s long connection with the Williamson, the WSA was formed in 1948 as an exhibiting society for professional and semi-professional artists in the North West of England. A number of names were involved in the early days but it was truly the concept of Tom Howard and John Marshall who approached the Lady Lever’s curator Sidney Davison. Davison in turn spoke to Will C Penn, Vice Principal of Liverpool School of Art, and he embraced it with enthusiasm. .  A preliminary meeting was held on 5 June 1948 in the Lady Lever Art Gallery where their first exhibition was held in 1949. The second exhibition was held in 1951 at the Williamson Art Gallery & Museum in Birkenhead where the Society has been based ever since. Will C. Penn became their first President and his work will be featured in an exhibition later this year to coincide with the 90th birthday celebrations for the Williamson (founded in 1928).
