About the Artist/Exhibition

An exhibition of textile drawings by Beth Barlow: crocheting the news, exploring ideas around connection.

In “Like It. Lump It. We Are All Connected”, socially engaged artist, Beth Barlow works with community collaborators to consider how each person, animal, action, mineral or vegetable are deeply connected. She explores these ideas Beth through crocheted art works inspired by the rolling news. The ideas around connectivity have found their expression in the creation of circles, each one a distinct body but each one bound to the next to create a striking installation.

On the morning that the artist sat down to begin working on the piece, the news was awash with images of the tragedy that had befallen Grenfell Tower.

Since the projects early planning days Beth Barlow has gone on to work with a wide range of community groups to explore perspectives on varied news stories.

The work seen in The Williamson Art Gallery and Museum will continue to grow through connections with communities. Join Beth on the 19th of September, the 13th and 14th of October between 11am and 4pm in the Williamson Cafe. If you have a crochet hook, bring it with you or if you have a particular yarn that you might like to use, please bring it along but Beth will have a suitcase of selected yarns and some spare crochet hooks.
