About the Artist/Exhibition

Join guitarist Hugo Zuleta Garcia in a concert of solo guitar music at the Williamson Art Gallery on the evening of Saturday the 4th of August.

Born into a family of seven, Venezuelan musician Hugo Zuleta began playing music from an early age with his brother, initially playing the “cuatro”, a four string guitar and later playing the harp. After studying  Engineering in Liverpool, he developed his UK musical career with his first solo guitar recital held at the Liverpool University in 1970 and he continued to play as part of Los Maracuchos with his brother Nelson, and a highlight of this time was playing with the master of flamenco Paco Peña.

Hugo returned to Venezuela to study music, gathering new skills by attending master classes as he was largely self taught. As a concert artist, he has performed at numerous international guitar festivals including the first International Guitar Festival of Great Britain in 1991 and Festival International de la Guitar de Chile.

In London, Hugo appeared at the Hommage to Maestro Joaquin Rodrigo, composer of Aranjuez concerto for Guitar and Orchestra with Cecilia Leon Rodrigo, organised by the Spanish and Venezuelan Embassies in 1996.

He was the founding president of the Venezuelan Guitar Association in Caracas.

In his programme for solo guitar at the Williamson, he play tribute to Frederic Chopin, and spanish and Latin composers with the second part of the evening mostly dedicated to the work of Maestro Antonio Lauro (1917-1986,) considered to be one of the foremost South American composers for the guitar in the 20th century.

Tickets are £15 or £12 concession (for those on benefits, in full time education or members of the Liverpool Guitar Society and Williamson and Priory Friends). The cafe will be open during the evening and during the interval. Tickets are available from the front desk and are limited.
