DESCRIPTION:Since 2025\, Steve des Landes has been Artist in Residence at the Williamson. With a studio in our Art Room\, his intention starting the residency was to work on larger-scale paintings. \nHe will be hosting Open Studio sessions every Friday evening\, 6 – 8:30pm. Between these hours you can drop into his studio\, see what he’s working on and ask any questions. SUMMARY:Echoes of the Floating World
DESCRIPTION:The Williamson possesses a small but notable collection of woodblock prints in the Japanese Ukiyo-e style. \nThese were made by some of the most important names in the period\, from Hiroshige to Hokusai. \nTheir motifs of flat perspectives\, high vantage points\, and bold colour distinctions\, were a radical influence across European art\, including by artists from Wirral. \nAs such\, this exhibition will show local artworks alongside Ukiyo-e prints\, communicating how Wirral artists have been influenced by\, and in dialogue with\, artists from across the world. \n  \nEnds 6th February 2027

SUMMARY:ORIGINS AND DIVERSIONS Paintings on canvas by Pete Hoida
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Williamson is proud to present an exhibition by Birkenhead born Pete Hoida. He lived in the area until the age of 4. He and his parents lived with his grandparents in Glover Street\, before moving to the newly built Woodchurch Estate. His grandfather worked at Cammell Laird shipyard\, his father in Liverpool for a company that fitted out the interiors of Cunard and Blue Funnel liners. \n  \nPete Hoida’s career in painting spanned fifty years. In 2017 he wrote: \n“What use painting is to woman or man is unknown\, yet it is surely necessary\, as attested to by the caveman and the dandy. I have long pursued a path that avoided the health-plans and dogmas of the high-priests and the moneylenders and yet have overthrown nothing but painterly clichés and visual platitudes. I am not looking to produce patterns; each period of painting has created\, or found\, its own identity. Sometimes the characteristics of the work\, or foundations\, carry over from one year into the next period. Or subside for a time before reappearing transformed\, made new yet again. Paintings from the 2010’s can present aspects of the 70’s. The colour say\, or the motif\, or motive force\, the brush-stroke\, the time-line\, the structure\, its translucency or opacity\, its serenity or punch. I have eschewed drawing\, images\, narrative and subject; I have defied the camera that always lies preferring the story of the brush that lies. I have quarrelled with the canvas and lost and I have found the surface and ignited it. The prime purpose of my work is immediacy of pleasure in the simply visual\, but also promoting through its structure\, its facture and expressive gesture\, the values of order and civilisation; a civility of vision founded on the beauty of discernment made manifest.” \n  \nPete Hoida completed his studies at Goldsmiths\, London\, moving to Stroud in 1974 where he painted full-time until his death in 2023. He maintained links with the Wirral and the video ‘Black Severn Angel’ on his website includes filming in New Brighton\, The Priory and Rock Ferry. SUMMARY:Marc Davenant: REBELLION!
DESCRIPTION:“Disobedience\, in the eyes of anyone who has read history\, is man’s original virtue. It is through disobedience that progress has been made\, through disobedience and through rebellion” Oscar Wilde \n  \nRebellion! is a social documentary photography exhibition which explores protest as an essential part of the cultural identity of Great Britain. The exhibition includes photographs and testimony from protesters as well as from those who may have been targeted by the protests. It explores the social issues around protest\, such as the fracturing of social cohesion in blighted post-industrial communities\, which fuel dissatisfaction with the status quo. \nThe Rebellion! project was completed by Marc Davenant over a period of twelve years and includes three of his winning photographs from the Portrait of Britain competition. In addition to dynamic photography of actual protests\, Rebellion! also includes portraits and stories of people at the centre of issues which stimulate protest such as immigration. It is hoped that the inclusion of these images and stories will help foster better understanding and an appreciation that these are individuals rather than statistics. Everyone has a story. \n  \nAbout the photographer: \nMarc Davenant is a social documentary photographer who works with marginalised communities and uses photography to highlight social inequality. His Outsiders project on homelessness and substandard housing has had critical acclaim.
