Title:
A ROOM OF ONE’S OWN: THE BEDSITS OF BLOOMSBURY

New access to rooms of their own had a profound impact on how female artists lived, studied and networked in the first two decades of the twentieth century. This talk explores the work produced by women who lived, studied, painted, networked, and often modelled throughout London’s system of bedsits, and traces the impact of this lifestyle in their work.  Focusing on Emily Carr (1871-1945), Vanessa Bell (1879-1961) and Nina Hamnett’s (1890-1956) early career experiences, it builds a picture of the role that living independently played in allowing them to develop their vocations.
