About the Artist/Exhibition

Not an exhibition but a new space. Nurturing roots & shoots to grow The Green Gallery at the Williamson.

At the centre of the Williamson Art Gallery is an enclosed courtyard, currently known as The Quad. Did you know the space was there?

For almost 90 years, this outside/inside heart of the gallery was derelict and without purpose. The building lacked a secure outdoor area and the planned garden offered the potential for a usable and adaptable outdoor space, considerably increasing the attractiveness of the gallery. The new space will offer a green haven to visitors, local residents and anyone who needs a moment of quiet, as well as providing a venue for family celebrations and corporate events.

Our aim is to bring this space, ‘The Quad“, into use as The Green Gallery, where all visitors can sit freely to enjoy the plants and sculpture, or even to take inspiration from the surroundings for their own artwork. Designed by Ainsley Gommon Architects, the hard landscaping has been installed by the Landstruction team to create a secure outdoor space for celebrations, events and exhibitions. The Green Gallery continues to evolve and the next phase of fundraising is focussed on raising monies for a planted and landscaped ‘Secret Garden’ which will commence next spring and be undertaken by Landstruction.

The Wirral Museums Service, fully supported by the Friends, provides summer courses for children and also works with disadvantaged groups including people with mental, sensory and physical difficulties so an outside “break-out space” will be a major and essential asset.

We need your support to turn this idea into a growing, living, blooming wonderful space. We have been very successful in getting local sponsorship and grants but we have also attracted individual donations from the public. So far The Williamson and Priory Friends have received funds through gallery donations, JustGivingBAFTA gala ticket sales and charitable donations from Aviva Charities Trust, Bathgate TrustCamden TrustDuchy of Lancaster and Postcode Lottery fund as well as financial support from Wirral Borough Council.

To donate to The Quad Appeal personally, please donate through our Just Giving account;-
